Course Overview

Trainees practise identifying and locating underground services using a utility locator during civil construction training in Australia.

RIICCM202E – Identify, Locate and Protect Underground Services gives participants the practical skills and knowledge to safely manage the risks associated with underground services across civil construction, utilities, resources, and general industry worksites. The course covers how to prepare for service locating work, contact the national referral service and utility owners, use service locating equipment, mark out services, establish clearance distances, and advise on protection and non-destructive excavation requirements.

This unit applies to workers in operational roles and those overseeing construction work. It is relevant to any role that involves ground disturbance — including excavation, drilling, boring, and driving — where underground services such as gas, water, electrical, telecommunications, and sewer infrastructure may be present.

Training is delivered by experienced industry trainers at our facility or on-site across Western Australia.

Who needs this training?

New to industry

If your role involves any ground disturbance — excavation, drilling, boring, or civil construction work — and you don't yet hold a formal qualification in identifying and protecting underground services, this course gives you the skills and knowledge to manage these risks safely and in line with industry requirements.

Renewal due

There is no legislated expiry date for this unit, however many employers and principal contractors require current training as a condition of site access, particularly for roles involving excavation or ground disturbance. If it has been some time since your last training, or Australian standards and practices have changed, this course gets you back up to date.

Team training

If your workforce regularly carries out ground disturbance work across construction, civil, utilities, or resources projects, we can come to your site. On-site delivery is available across Western Australia. Contact us to discuss group bookings and scheduling options.
