RIIWHS202E and MSMWHS217
Combined Confined Space Entry and Gas Test Atmospheres
Confined spaces and hazardous atmospheres are among the most serious and unpredictable hazards in Australian workplaces. This combined course delivers both RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces and MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres in a single training day, giving participants the skills and knowledge to safely test, monitor, and work in confined spaces in line with WHS legislation and industry requirements.

Course Overview

This combined course brings together the two units most critical to safe confined space operations — atmospheric testing and safe entry procedures. Delivered together, participants gain a complete, practical understanding of how gas testing and confined space entry work as part of the same safe work process, rather than as two separate skills.
The course covers how to identify confined space hazards, obtain and apply entry permits, select and use atmospheric testing equipment, interpret gas readings, implement tag and lock-out procedures, maintain communication with the stand-by person, and safely enter, work in, and exit a confined space. Completing both units in a single course removes the need for separate enrolments and ensures participants are job-ready for confined space work from day one. Training is delivered by experienced industry trainers at our facility or on-site across Western Australia.
Course Details
Certification
Participants who successfully complete all training and assessment requirements will be issued two units on a single Statement of Attainment by Paratus Training (RTO 45274):
RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces
MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
Both units must be completed to receive the Statement of Attainment. If a participant is assessed as competent in one unit only, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for that unit only.
Course Outline
Confined Space Entry — RIIWHS202E
WHS laws, the WA Work Health and Safety (Confined Spaces) Regulations 2022, and workplace procedures for confined space entry
What constitutes a confined space and the specific hazards associated with them
Obtaining and confirming a confined space entry permit
Selecting and wearing PPE appropriate for confined space work
Identifying and implementing signage and barrier requirements
Positioning rescue equipment at the entry point
Applying tag and lock-out procedures
Gaining access to and exiting the confined space correctly
Maintaining communication with the stand-by person throughout the entry
Complying with entry permit requirements and monitoring allocated entry time
Conducting a confined space inspection on exit
Completing entry permit requirements, records, and documentation
Gas Testing — MSMWHS217
WHS legislation, Australian Standard AS 2865-2009 Confined Spaces, and workplace requirements for atmospheric testing
Common atmospheric hazards — oxygen deficiency, oxygen enrichment, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, methane, and other flammable and toxic gases
Explosive range, upper and lower explosive limits (UEL/LEL)
Exposure standards — time-weighted averages (TWA), short-term exposure limits (STEL), and peak limitation values
Work permit systems and atmospheric testing requirements
Selecting and calibrating gas testing equipment
Testing atmospheres by hand and by lowering the instrument on a line
Interpreting and reporting gas readings and taking required action when readings are unacceptable
Ongoing atmospheric monitoring during work activities
Cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining gas testing equipment
Maintaining records of tests and results in line with workplace procedures
Prerequisites and Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisite units required for this course.
All participants must:
Be physically able to enter, work in, and exit a confined space during practical training and assessment
Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Provide valid proof of identity
Have sufficient Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to interpret workplace procedures, documentation, and gas readings
Bring a pen
Wear appropriate PPE: steel-capped boots, long pants, and a hi-vis long sleeve shirt. If you do not have a hi-vis shirt, Paratus Training can provide a hi-vis vest
Please let us know before enrolment if you have any medical conditions, injuries, or physical limitations — including claustrophobia or respiratory conditions — that may affect your ability to safely take part in practical training.

Who needs this training?
New to industry
If your role requires you to enter or work in a confined space and you don't yet hold formal training for confined space entry or gas testing, this course gives you both qualifications in a single day. You will leave with the skills and knowledge to enter, test, and work in a confined space safely and in line with WHS legislation and entry permit requirements.
Renewal due
There is no legislated expiry date for either unit, however Safe Work Australia's Code of Practice for Confined Spaces and Australian Standard AS 2865-2009 both recommend refresher training every two years. Many employers and principal contractors also require current certification in both units as a condition of site access. This course is the most efficient way to update both qualifications at the same time.
Team training
If your workforce regularly performs confined space entries across construction, resources, utilities, or maintenance operations, we can come to your site and train your team together. On-site delivery is available across Western Australia and allows both units to be delivered and contextualised to the specific confined spaces your team works in. Contact us to discuss group bookings and scheduling options.
Related Courses
Confined space entry and gas testing are frequently required together before workers can safely access restricted or hazardous site areas. The courses below are worth reviewing if you are building out your safety competencies or preparing for environments with multiple access and atmospheric hazard requirements.
