This course covers the skills and knowledge needed to safely select, use, and maintain a range of hand and power tools in line with WHS legislation and workplace procedures.

Course Overview

RIISAM203E – Use Hand and Power Tools gives participants the practical skills and knowledge to safely select, check, and use hand and power tools across resources, construction, civil, and maintenance environments. The course covers how to plan and prepare for tool use, identify and control hazards, select and check tools for serviceability, use tools correctly for the task, and carry out clean up and basic tool maintenance on completion.
This course is customised to the specific tools used in the participant's workplace. Hand tools covered include cutting, tightening, impact, digging, measuring, and clamping tools. Power tools include drills, grinders, saws, screwdrivers, wrenches, planers, sanders, and scalers. Participants are assessed using both hand and power tools on at least two occasions.

Certification
Participants who successfully complete all training and assessment requirements will be issued a Statement of Attainment for RIISAM203E – Use Hand and Power Tools by Paratus Training (RTO 45274).
Course Outline
WHS laws, workplace procedures, and documentation requirements for using hand and power tools
Types, characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of hand and power tools
Planning and preparing for the task — reviewing work requirements and identifying the right tools for the job
Identifying hazards and environmental issues and implementing control measures
Selecting and wearing appropriate PPE including safety glasses and hearing protection
Obtaining and interpreting emergency procedures
Selecting and checking hand tools for serviceability — identifying and tagging faulty or damaged tools
Using hand tools correctly for the task — cutting, tightening, impact, digging, measuring, and clamping
Clamping and fixing material safely during use
Storing hand tools safely when not in use
Selecting and checking power tools for serviceability
Ensuring power leads and cords are safely positioned
Using power tools for the required sequence of operations to achieve the correct outcome
Identifying and tagging faulty or damaged power tools before, during, and after use
Undertaking operational maintenance of power tools
Storing power tools safely when not in use
Clearing the work area and disposing of materials correctly
Cleaning, maintaining, and inspecting tools on completion and reporting any issues
Completing written records and reports in line with workplace procedures
Prerequisites and Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisite units required for this course.
All participants must:
Be physically able to use hand and power tools during practical training and assessment
Bring a pen
Wear appropriate PPE: steel-capped boots, long pants, hi-vis long sleeve shirt, safety glasses, and hearing protection. If you do not have a hi-vis shirt, Paratus Training can provide a hi-vis vest

New to industry
If your role requires you to use hand and power tools as part of your daily work and you don't yet hold a formal qualification for this, this course gives you the skills and knowledge to use tools safely and in line with WHS legislation and workplace requirements.
Renewal due
There is no legislated expiry date for this unit, however many employers and principal contractors require current tool competency as a condition of site access. If it has been some time since your last training, or you are required to use new or different tools, this course gets you back up to date.
Team training
We can come to your site and train your team on the specific hand and power tools they use every day. On-site delivery is available across Western Australia and is the most practical option for this course, as training can be contextualised directly to your workplace tools and environment.
