Course Overview
RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces is the nationally recognised unit covering the skills and knowledge needed to enter and work safely in confined spaces. These environments — tanks, pits, silos, pipelines, and similar restricted spaces — carry risks that aren't always obvious, including poor air quality, limited entry and exit points, and the potential for rapid changes in conditions.
Participants learn to:
Identify confined space hazards, including atmospheric risks
Follow correct permit and entry procedures
Use required PPE and safety equipment correctly
Apply emergency and rescue awareness procedures specific to confined space work
Training is delivered by trainers with genuine industry experience, not just classroom theory. Sessions run at our Bayswater facility or on-site, with on-site delivery available across Perth, the Peel region, and regional WA — letting participants train in the actual environment where they'll be working.

Certification
Participants who successfully complete all training and assessment requirements will be issued a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces by Paratus Training (RTO 45274).
Course Outline
WHS laws, the WA Work Health and Safety (Confined Spaces) Regulations 2022, and workplace procedures for confined space entry
Understanding what constitutes a confined space and the specific hazards associated with them
Obtaining, interpreting, and confirming work requirements and documentation
Obtaining and confirming authorisation of a confined space entry permit
Identifying hazards, environmental issues, and risks and implementing control measures
Selecting and wearing appropriate PPE for confined space work
Obtaining and interpreting emergency procedures with the stand-by person
Identifying and implementing signage and barrier requirements
Selecting tools and equipment, checking serviceability, and reporting faults
Positioning rescue equipment at the entry point
Gaining access to the confined space
Testing and monitoring the atmosphere for harmful elements in line with workplace procedures
Applying tag and lock-out procedures correctly
Maintaining ongoing communication with the stand-by person during entry
Complying with entry permit requirements and monitoring allocated entry time
Exiting the confined space correctly and recovering tools, equipment, and materials
Conducting a confined space inspection on exit
Removing tag and lock-out procedures and completing entry permit requirements
Clearing the work area, removing barriers and signs, and storing equipment
Conducting equipment inspections, servicing, and completing maintenance records
Prerequisites and Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisite units required for this course.
All participants must:
Be physically able to enter, work in, and exit a confined space during practical training and assessment
Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Bring a pen
Wear appropriate PPE: steel-capped boots, long pants, and a hi-vis long sleeve shirt. If you do not have a hi-vis shirt, Paratus Training can provide a hi-vis vest

Who needs this training?
New to industry
If your role requires you to enter or work in a confined space and you don't yet hold formal training for this work, this course gives you the skills and knowledge to do so safely and in line with WHS legislation and entry permit requirements.
Renewal due
There is no legislated expiry date for this unit, however Safe Work Australia's Code of Practice for Confined Spaces and industry best practice recommend refresher training every two years. Many employers and principal contractors also require current confined space training as a condition of site access. This course gets you back up to date with current WHS requirements and procedures.
